Anyway to create a read only assets role that can run depreciation and close the fixed asset period?

We have been trying to get this to work by copying the Asset Accounting manager seeded role and removing privileges but whenever we test the role we can only access the book monitor and there are no asset books available. The user has been given data access to the asset books for the role but we are not having any luck. If anyone has built a similar sort of role and has any advice that would be much appreciated.
