Is it mandatory to end date Legal Entity Registration for inactivating Legal Entity?

We want to make Legal Entity Inactive, but when we are trying to inactivate the Legal Entity Registration associated with the LE, we are not able to end date it as it is an identifying legal entity registration. Is it necessary to End date Legal Entity Registration if we want to inactivate Legal Entity or simply end dating Legal Entity is fine?
