Remove multiple instances with same name in Gradebook?

Is there any way to remove multiple instances in the Gradebook? We've had to change a few assessments and therefore create new instances. Every instance, old or new, shows up in the Gradebook, and people don't know which to select when trying to view grades (plus it makes for a very long list). Any suggestions or work arounds?
