Expiration vs Recurrence

I'm having a hard time figuring out when I should use a recurrence over an expiration. Right now I only use expirations to allow for skill renewals a set time after the skill is acquired (1 year after a person finishes the skill). Can someone give me a good example of when to use each? Thanks.
