Is anyone using Assets/Materials and if so how?

It looks like the assets and materials little icon is permanently tied to the attachment icon for enrollments.  I'd like to use attachments but since the other one is there I'm trying to figure out how to use it as well.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.
