Capturing external training data?

I'd like to find a more efficient way to capture and record external training in a User's card. Currently, we wait for a physical certificate to arrive, then manually enter the certificate's expiration date into a custom field in the User's card. I can then pull reports and pretty much treat that 'training' the same as any other completed course, etc.

I'm looking into the certifying agency's ability to play nicely with our LMS, but I'm curious how others deal with this situation. Please share your ideas and best practices!
