Market benchmarking in compensation

I've been asked how market benchmarking data might be incorporated into the calcualtions for salary increase recommendations. I can see how a compa ratio might be used to take the employee's current position within a pay range into account, but can't see where market data might be added to achieve the same sort of result.

Any assistance on this would be most helpful.
