Supervisor Permissions to Restrict Data Access

Does anyone have experience using supervisor permissions and groups to restrict what non-supervisors can see in the system?  For example, we want some of our users to be able to add sessions, but we only want them to see the data/users/events for their applicable populations in the control panel.  Any kind of guidance would be appreciated as we are still in the implementation phase.
