Custom fields on position/position profile page layouts?

I've created custom fields for position, but I don't seem to be able to add them to any of the position pages.  Can anyone give me a clue what is going wrong?

Here's what I did:

1) I create a custom field (any type: text, picklist tou name it)

2) In step 3 of the creation process I should be able to add the field to selected page layouts (or to all page layouts at once), but only the option "Select all page layouts" is visible there, not the individual page layouts.

I have tried with this checkbox checked, but nothing appeared on any of the position pages, nor was I able to add the fields manually in these pages; creating the field with the "select all page layouts" unchecked gave exactly the same result. I have the same problem with position profiles.
