BI Reporting - Joins

I went to use BI Reporting and needed to create a custom report on learning plans. I know I have used BI in the past to create a report, but it has been a while. I am used to using Report Manager.  Is it normal that you have to do all these joins with Data Views to create a report in BI? I don't recall previously having to do this before. This is not intuitive and reporting seems to be way more difficult with this tool.  What am I missing?
