Require an Exception where Approvals only go to 1st level when the Approver has a particular job rol

Absence approvals are setup in Fusion (not BPM).  Absences over so many days have 2 levels of Manager approval, this is setup and working.
The client wishes to keep this rule, but add an exception where if the 1st Approving Manager has the MD role,  they do not wish for approvals to go to the next level of management, but stop there.  In all other cases where the Employee is more than 2 levels below MD they still wish for the approval to go to 2 Levels of Approval.

Is this possible to achieve in the application?
