Uploading a custom icon for the springboard

Hi - I am wondering if it's possible to use a custom icon image on the springboard vs. select from those delivered on the page entry screen.  If so, how to I upload the icon so that it is selectable on the structure/edit page entry?  The icon will render an external website.
