Single Select Pick Lists

Am I missing something, or did we not get all of the functionality promised with single-select pick lists? From a previous briefing, I was under the impression we would have the ability to build the pick list off of EITHER a data table or an existing menu attribute. I was also under the impression we could filter the pick lists based on a selection in another attribute. It seems that all we got was the ability to use data tables, with no options for utilizing recommendation rules as pick list attributes are not available. The way it stands now, there
