Where can I find more information about OOTB facet functionality and road map plans?

We would like to improve the use of facets (aka filters) on our product listing pages. For instance improving the way price filters work and adding a brand filter. I would like to start by understanding the OOTB functions provided and any information you have about how these can be customized or enhanced.
