Recurring Learning Plans - If you Honor, when it recurs, what does it do

 As I study Recurring Learning Plans, I'm trying to better understand how they work.  If I set it up to "honor mapped" items, then when it recurs, it will mark itself complete because of this setting ... so, what's the purpose of this setting?  BUT, if I initially set the setting to be honor ... it gives the right people credit but as soon as a I change the setting on the LP, they get an incomplete on the LP.  BUT, if I set ignore, I don't have a way of giving people credit who may have just completed a
