Filter slowing down report?

Hi all - we are working on reporting through our Compensation - Workforce Compensation Real Time subject area.  We are only using the one subject area.  It's a summary report of data.  We are able to have it pull the full company in less than 2 minutes.  But when we add a filter for our Business Unit, it will run for 10+ minutes and eventually time out.  How is it possible that adding a filter to my report has actually increased the amount of time for it to run?  We are getting the attached error.  Any ideas of how best
