Impact of uploading a photo into a user's profile

I've heard that historically there was an impact to performance when uploading user photos.  Not sure if it slows the entire system down or if the "drawing" of user profile page takes longer.  Please share your learning/experience.  We have a need for our supervisors to see employee pics.
