How to change the Precision settings without "Customizing" a form

Our WFP form "Existing Employees" shows the compensation numbers with many decimals (i.e. 104417.25500800002).

We were told that if we "customize" an OOB form (i.e. change the precision settings), the form cannot be updated as part of the Upgrade process. Is this correct? How can we get the form to show "readable" numbers, like 104,417.00 or 104,417?
