Looking for ideas on how to generate manufacturing routings/work instructions in CPQ

Has anyone had the need to create manufacturing routings/work instructions in CPQ?  The only way that we can think of is using recommendation rules and then writing the results to an attribute.  Am looking for ideas on this.
