Interface approval flow information details to and fro from HCM Cloud to external application

We have a requirement where all approvals in HCM Cloud has to be interfaced to a custom on-premise approval engine used by all applications in customer enterprise. This approval engine has many built in business rules which they want to leverage to approve a request.

As such we need to send the requisite approval related attributes for creation of the approval in the custom application. Later when the approval is completed and based on status we need to change the status of the approval in HCM Cloud. I understand through a BI report or through an API it may be possible to send all approval related attributes to the custom application. But I am not able to figure out how do we change status of approval in HCM Cloud when it gets approved in custom application.
