general implementation question- how far in advance do you configure production?

Curious how far in advance do you start to configure production?  I know many implementation partners like to wait till close to go live to configure production and so we get the cleanest and most accurate configuration in.  Has anyone done this months prior to go live and if so, what has been your experience been like?
