What is the use of the "item details" that you define at the item level within the Item Catalog?

Hello all,

I'm wondering what the use is for the item details that you can define for each item within the item catalog. For example, when defining a license item, you can define the "Renewal Required" field as a Yes or No. I would think that when it is then added to a person's profile, the "Renewal Required" field on the profile would auto-populate from the that definition. Instead, the person can still choose a "Yes" or "No". Where do the item details actually have an impact?
