Alert Notification for an expired Document of Record

Hi Guys, 

Just looking to see if anyone has/or is looking to use the Alerts Composer to fire off a notification when a document's "To date" has been passed (an expiry date). Can it be done? Is it worth setting up in this area considering time and effort involved?
