"The application is invalid."

Error upon login after removing application. Help!

I removed an application on Friday from our development (test) environment planning to "start fresh" on Monday morning, but when I logged in, instead of the "what application do you want to create splash page," I received "The application [APPNAME] is invalid." and only an option to Sign Out. (screen shot attached) Hitting calc manager directly takes me to an empty screen.   I tried Google but found nothing relevant. I am at a loss. I am not sure how to find out where the "phantom" application definition is coming from and more importantly how to properly remove it.
