Are future emailing capabilities being considered?

Hello, I have several use cases (approval flow related) that would benefit from emailing capability from within business rules or by possibly employing a more flexible approval flow system if the platform supported it.  Has anyone heard of anything on the horizon?  I understand we could roll with groovy\REST + 3rd party email delivery service but I'd be looking for something a bit more in the box.
