Auto Terminate an Assignment on adding a new work relationship

We have a requirement where we would like system to auto terminate an assignment/work relationship if we are adding a new one for the employee.E.g if I employee 123 is a contingent worker and we are now adding a work relationship for him as an employee, we want the contingent worker relation to be auto terminated.

Please let me know if this is possible and if there is any way in the system to do this.
