Can we capture serial numbers during receiving for goods without Item IDs?

Can we capture serial numbers during receiving for something that doesn't have an item number to be able to use as a reference that the serial number has arrived?  For instance, if I have a PO for 5 laptops and the laptops were entered as a non-catalog request, can I capture the serial number for each of the five laptops through the receive expected shipments page when they arrive?
