best practice for managing "Professional Last Name"?

We have scenarios of employees who have a different legal last name than the name they would like to display in the directory. They would like all name displays to show their Professional Last name, however this is a small population of workers and we do not want to populate a Professional Last Name for all our employees. Is there a best practice for this?
