Check Line Manager's Status For Inactive in Approval Rules

Check Line Manager's Status For Inactive in Approval RulesContent
Hello Everyone,
Is there a way in approval rules to check to see if the "user's" line manager is inactive?
Our use case is that we want to use this for the Change Manager transaction.
Currently the approvals for these transactions are failing if the user's line manager being used for the approval is inactive.
We would like to set up the approval rule logic so that if the user's line manager status is inactive, then the requestor's line manager would be used instead for the approval.
Any ideas for this would be very much appreciated.
