Advice about correcting Assignment Status

Hello,

I have to make a correction in the 'Assignment Status' field.

The correction should be happen without changing the effective date of the assignment record.

What is the preferred way to make this correction - is it possible to use mass update ?

Am I correct that mass update is relevant only for updates because of the needs for effective update date ?
