Is a Smartview Shared Connection XML file still supported in cloud

I can't seem to find equivalent documentation on using a shared connections xml file for cloud applications although it's been blogged about by others.  Assuming that the documentation doesn't exist are cloud based connections still officially supported in a connection file?  Any special considerations for using them?
