Is it possible to automate the release of project invoices?

I'm working on making the release of project billing invoices happen automatically. I've been told that there is a Rest process that can make this work, but I'm looking for a method within the system. I have been able to automate approval, but not release. Does anyone know if this is possible through configurations or setup, or is Rest the only option? Thanks!
