HCM - Is it possible to do Mass Assignment Status Change more efficiently?

We often do a Mass Assignment Status Change for employees from Inactive - No Payroll to Inactive - Payroll Elig with earnings after processing the payment we switch them back to Inactive - No Payroll. We use HDL to load this data. We spend quite a bit of time preparing the data for the HDL. Has anyone perfected this process, and doing it more efficiently and willing to share their learnings would be highly appreciated.
