Performance Issues with Securing person security profiles in data roles using Areas of Responsibilit

I would like to know if there is likely to be a performance impact as using Custom SQL criteria will require having a greater number of data roles than using an AOR would

We have an open design question around securing person security profiles in data roles using Areas of Responsibility or using a Custom SQL criteria. The client would like to secure using Business Units but organisation hierarchy is no longer an available criteria for person security profile which is why we are presented with options of AOR or Custom Criteria SQL (secured on non dynamic basis against business unit).
