Problems with job renewals pulling into New Hire Group - TBE to Learn

We are having an issue with our TBE integration to Learn sending a new hire date every time a person goes into an "Onboarding" status in TBE. This happens with promotions, contract renewals, transfers, even an updated W-4 or Direct Deposit change. People completing these kinds of things don't need a new hire date, but Learn is then pulling them into my New Hires group, which is based on hire date. 

How do I fix this? Is it a TBE issue or something I can fix in the integration? Is there a different field we should be pulling into Learn as the hire date? Are these forms that are being completed in TBE set up incorrectly to be putting the user into Onboarding status?
