To retain mappings or not to retain mappings.....

I have been advised to always retain mappings on my Learning Plans, but I'm questioning whether that is the right decision. I have read through the help information (unhelpful) and am having trouble grasping when you would want to retain mappings and when not to. The LP in question is a required set of new employee trainings. If I retain the mapping, people are always tied to this LP, even after completed. Is that necessary? If I choose not to retain the mapping, does the completion remain on their transcript? Thanks for any advice you can provide!
