Engineering Items, better way to handle

Hi Friends

Our customer has PIM and has a business process of using Items for R&D (engineering purpose) for Purchase and Make. We do not want to create new Item for Production Item. What is the better way to handle this? Should I use "Life Cycle Phase" and/or Item "Status"?
