Managing probation process

Does anyone use the system currently to manage their end to end probation process for new hires? We currently use manual e-mail reminders to managers and individuals and looking into automating this. Some ideas that seem feasible are alert composer (to create alerts to remind managers and individuals to schedule timely reviews), potentially journeys or report bursting. It would be great to hear about what has worked/not worked for others system-wise? For example, has anyone set up additional flexfields to store information around any extensions and whether the probation was completed?
