What happens when a workflow task expires?

If I make use of the expiration policy in the BPM worklist and set a task level deadline for that approval rule to expire; what happens when no action is taken on that transaction by the approval deadline? Does the transaction get withdrawn and submitter has to submit again? Or does this behave differently? Just wanted to understand what exactly 'expiration' means here.

Any pointers will be helpful!
