Removing already approved items from bell notification

I have items like absenses or time cards that need approval. I approve them within the system, however the bell notification (push) still shows the item needing approval. When I attempt to approve again, I receive an error message that I may not have privilege to the item. I am thinking it is because I already approved them. Is there a way to get these items to clear from my bell notification since they have already been taken care of?
