Secondary VNIC stuck in "Detaching..."

I tried to delete a secondary VNIC, and now it's permanently "Detaching" and I can't restart the VM

I have an instance (vm.standard.a1.flex) running ubuntu.  I added a secondary VNIC, and after playing with this for a while subsequently decided that the resulting configuration just complicated things, and decided to delete the VNIC.  The VM is shutdown as far as the OS is concerned, but still shows as "Running" in the cloud console.

Attempting to delete the VNIC appeared to ok, but the state of the VNIC is now "Detaching" and won't progress to detached, nor will it disappear.  The VM itself can't be started or rebooted because "instance [...] is currently being modified, try again later"
