How to improve CPQ performance

Lets say we have customer using CPQ for so long and unfortunately the performance is too bad and we are planning to deep dive into the system and see what best can be done to improve the performance. To do this I would like to know what steps need to be considered, where to start, what details are required to debug.

Assume we have access to pre-prod. I'm looking for a step by step guide for such use cases.
