Approval workflow for new employee created through REST API

Summary:

Part of our process is to load new employees from a 3rd party recruitment system. We plan to perform this through a Rest API load. We want an approval process to kick-off before the record is saved to the database.

Found in MOS that approvals will not trigger if the newly hired employee is submitted from REST Services.

Has anyone come up with a workaround for this?
