Is there a way for derivation to still occur for properties that are not editable by users?

Derived Fields must be editable by users

Content (required):

Prior to the latest release I was able to derive properties and lock them down for direct edit by users. It appears now if a user impacts a field that triggers a derivation the property will nullify the field if the user doesn't have direct edit access. Does anyone know of a way around this?
