Phone Details - make Work Extension fixed length

When adding Phone Details and selecting a type = Work Extension make the Number field length = 5

I'm trying to get the desired behavior using an EL Expression but not getting the desired results.

#{row.bindings.PhoneType.selectedValue.lookupCode=='W0'?5:0}

This does work if a person has an existing work extension and it is edited. If data is already there and greater than 5 digits it gets truncated down to 5. However when adding a new extension the validation does not take place and more than 5 digits can be stored.

Is this even possible?
