Need the ability to limit what triggers the need for a Contract Amendment to go for Approval

Specifically referring to the Contract with respect to PPM (Sell Contract). Need the ability to limit what triggers the need for a Contract Amendment to go for Approval. We have created a workflow that requires Contract to be approved, but the issue is that every small change to the Contract (add a note, description, update to a bill rate, a date, etc) is sending the Contract back through the workflow. Is there a way to limit what requires the Contract to go for amendment and hence through the Contract approval workflow?
