Why is the period start date in msc_period_start_dates not always the 1st of the month

Summary:

We have mfg calendar setup with monthly type(not 445 or 544 etc) and we noticed that for certain months like May-22 the period start date is 02-may-22 instead of 1-may-22. This is making 1-may-22 fall in the april-22 bucket and causing some issues in plan output.
