Auto complete rules to default sequencing of contacts by contact type

We have a use case where the sequence of the contact needs to be determined per employee by the contact type. Eg if employee already has a spouse, the spouse's number would be 01, a child then the child's sequence would be 01. If the employee gains another child, the second child's sequence number would be 02. If there is another step child then the sequence number would be 01 as step child contact type is different. Each employee would have a counter of their own.
Can auto complete rules be used to auto default a DFF attribute with the next sequence within the contact type based on the logic above?
