How to make fields mandatory in workbench (either legacy or enhanced)?

We need to make sure certain fields mandatory on a Item Classification business object in workbench. We tried both action check and "constraining" setup in screenset but neither worked. This is a must-have requirement. Any pointer will be appreciated.
