What is the difference between OSMS and using yum for patching? - OCI Compute Instance Configuration

PURPOSE:

This document describes the difference between OSMS related patching and manually applying OS patches using yum command.

DETAILS:

There are no differences when updating packages either with OSMS or yum. OS will be patched accordingly.

There are benefits of using OSMS over traditional methods such as:

  • Update several instances at once with instance groups.
  • Along with updating packages, it enables you to monitor the packages installed on instances, search for and add or remove packages.
  • Covers Linux and Windows instances.
  • Schedule job requests.
